Missiles were fired at the city of Tel Aviv in Israel today. This was called a final show of strength from the Hamas militant group based in Gaza. Missiles also hit other parts of Israel in the north and south.
Here are the key points about this attack:
- Eight missiles were launched into Israel from the Gaza Strip
- At least one home was damaged in the wealthy suburb of Herzliya
- Other buildings, like a parking garage, were also hit by rockets
- No injuries have been reported so far, but it was just by chance
- The Israeli military says Hamas is trying to use up its remaining missiles
What Happened During the Missile Strike?
Noga Tarnopolsky is a journalist who experienced the missile attack firsthand in Tel Aviv. She described the scary scene:
“I was on a train when the air raid sirens went off, sounding like from an old war movie. Everything stops and everyone gets rattled. You could hear the whizzes of the missiles being intercepted and huge booms.”
She says there is a feeling of cynicism that this is still happening after eight months of conflict. However, the Israeli military claims Hamas is launching a final show of strength by emptying its remaining missile stockpiles as Israel takes over Hamas’ last strongholds in Gaza.
Rising Tensions Over Gaza Operation
The timing of this Tel Aviv attack is significant. It comes just days after the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to stop its military operation in the Rafah area of Gaza. His coalition partners have pressured Netanyahu to defy this ruling and expand operations in Rafah.
This missile strike will likely increase those calls for a ramped-up military response in Gaza’s Rafah region. At the same time, families of Israeli hostages being held by Hamas are pressuring Netanyahu to prioritize getting them released before escalating the war further.
Public Outcry to Free Hostages
One powerful example is the massive funeral procession happening now for Hanania Shalkouk. He was a 42-year-old Israeli man who had been held hostage by Hamas since October 7th. When his body was returned yesterday, his family called on all Israelis to attend the funeral as a show of force, demanding the return of the remaining hostages.
Tarnopolsky states, “Thousands and thousands of people are attending this huge procession. His family wants to bring the hostages back rather than grow the war.”
Moving Forward After the Attacks
As cleanup continues from today’s missile barrage, tensions remain high between Israel and Hamas. With 64% of the Israeli public prioritizing hostage return over continued fighting, Prime Minister Netanyahu faces growing pressure on multiple fronts.
Will he escalate military action to dislodge Hamas from its last Gaza footholds? Or will he shift focus to negotiating the release of Israeli captives before any further offensives? The coming days will reveal Netanyahu’s next moves after this latest show of strength rocket attack.
