Ingredients You’ll Need
To make yumna’s healthy mashed potatoes, here’s what to grab:
- Yukon potatoes (or another yellow, buttery kind)
- Low-fat sour cream
- Vegetable broth
- Butter
- Garlic cloves
- Chives or other herbs
- Salt and pepper
These simple ingredients make potatoes that are smooth, buttery, and full of flavour. Yum!
How to Make the Mashed Potatoes
Step 1: Boil the Potatoes and Garlic
First, cut the potatoes into quarters and boil a big pot of water. Once it’s nice and hot, carefully add the potato pieces to the water. Remember to add some salt, too! This will give the potatoes lots of flavor.
Yumna enjoys adding garlic cloves to the water; they’ll boil with the potatoes, enhancing the flavour. Cover the pot and cook for approximately 15-20 minutes. You’ll recognize it’s ready when the potatoes can be easily pierced with a fork.
Step 2: Mash Everything Together

Drain out the water when the potatoes and garlic are nice and soft. Now’s the time to add the other ingredients and get mashing!
Pour in the vegetable broth, butter, and sour cream. Then, grab a masher, fork, or electric mixer and smash it until creamy. Yumna likes to get the potatoes super smooth so they don’t look as much like a veggie to her kids. Smart idea!
Mash the potatoes while they’re still warm; the heat will help blend everything smoothly. If necessary, sample the mixture and adjust the seasoning with additional salt or pepper.
Step 3: Serve and Enjoy!
Transfer the mashed potatoes from the pot to a pretty serving bowl. If you want, put a small piece of butter on top to make it look extra tasty.
Finally, sprinkle on some chopped chives or another favourite herb. And if you didn’t add pepper before, you can add a dash now.
That’s it! You’ve got a big bowl of healthy mashed potatoes that are creamy, fluffy, buttery and delicious. The best part? They’re lower in calories and fat, so you can feel good about enjoying them.
Why This Recipe is Better For You
Typical mashed potatoes are loaded with butter and heavy cream. Yumna’s recipe swaps in low-fat sour cream and a bit of butter. Using the broth and garlic adds a ton of flavour without needing as much fat.
This simple switch makes the potatoes healthier but still totally delicious. It’s the perfect way to lighten up a Thanksgiving favourite!
