Israel’s Army recovered the bodies of 3 Israeli hostages killed by Hamas in Gaza. Here are key points:
- Israeli forces found the bodies of Shani Luk, Amit Bisula, and Yitzhak Galena.
- Hamas militants killed the three on October 7th at a music festival.
- Their bodies were taken into the Gaza territory until they recovered this week.
- This happened during the recent conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza.
What else is happening with the conflict in Gaza?
- Aid shipments have started arriving via a temporary pier built by the U.S. off Gaza’s coast.
- Israel faced pressure to allow more relief supplies to enter blockaded Gaza.
- Over 500,000 Palestinians have fled their homes, seeking shelter, food and safety.
- Israel’s allies, like the U.S. and U.K., are providing $300 million in humanitarian aid.
Will this temporary aid pier provide enough help for the people of Gaza? Keep reading to learn more.
Israeli Forces Battle Hamas in Gaza
Israel’s Army is fighting Hamas in areas of south, central, and northern Gaza. In Jabalia, they found a weapons stockpile belonging to Hamas militants.
A video from Hamas shows their arsenal of heavy weapons. Israel had earlier said this area was cleared.
But the fighting and blockades have made it very difficult to get aid into Gaza. Most supply routes have been blocked off.
The Future for Gaza
What will happen in Gaza after the fighting ends? I talked to the Palestinian Ambassador to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour.
Mansour said the top priority is stopping the “carnage and aggression” against Palestinians. He wants Israeli forces to withdraw from Gaza completely.
He said significant Palestinian Authority funds have already been allocated to employees in Gaza. Mansour suggested Palestinians could work with Hamas on governing Gaza once Israel leaves.
However, he accused Israel of committing “genocide” against Palestinians, which Israel firmly denies.
UN Backs Palestinian Statehood
Recently, at the UN, members voted to support making Palestine a full member state, which would recognize a Palestinian state.
Israel reacted angrily, saying the UN charter was “shredded.” But Mansour said it was Israel insulting the UN and separating itself from world opinion.
He believes Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Although Israel disputes this, Mansour thinks more UN orders against the “genocide” may come.
Looking Ahead
While temporary aid is helping, the future of Gaza remains uncertain. Much will depend on if Israel and Palestinian groups can stop the fighting.
The Palestinian Authority seems open to governing Gaza jointly with Hamas if Israel withdraws. But the two sides have vastly different views on Israel’s actions.
Finding a lasting peace that satisfies both Palestinians and Israelis will be an immense challenge. Only time will tell if diplomacy can end the cycle of violence.
