Officers Serving a Warrant Come Under Fire
It all started on a Wednesday afternoon in a neighborhood east of Charlotte. A team of police officers, part of a task force tracking wanted suspects, approached a house to serve a warrant.
As they neared the home, the suspect suddenly came out and opened fire on them. In the initial gunfight, three officers from the task force were killed on the spot. A fourth officer from the local Charlotte police department was also shot and later died at the hospital.
Suspect Killed After Long Standoff
The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes Jr., was also shot dead in the exchange of gunfire outside the house. However, the situation took an even more dangerous turn when a second person started shooting from inside the home.
This led to an intense standoff that dragged on for almost three hours. SWAT teams and armored vehicles were called in to assist. Finally, police stormed the house, where they found two women taking shelter inside.
“A Tragic Day for Charlotte”
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a flurry of gunshots during the incident. Charlotte’s police chief, Johnny Jennings, called it “an absolute tragic day” and said the officers killed were “heroes” simply trying to keep the community safe.
